August 23rd - Redline
For the first time in the 2008 season, the Texas Outlaws drove thru rain all around the surrounding areas and rolled into Redline Raceway ready to do battle. At first it looked like mother nature was going to postpone the race was suddenly the clouds parted and it was blue skies over the race track. Twelve teams showed up and here's what went down after two rounds of qualifying:
- Ken Thomas - 4.093 at 178 mph
- Gaylen Smith - 4.409 at 163 mph
- Doug Riesterer - 4.516 at 131 mph
- Bobby Booth - 4.524 at 150 mph
- Eric Clark - 4.814 at 138 mph
- Howard Brown - 4.937 at 156 mph
- Mike Jones - 5.389 at 147 mph
- Steve Gorman - 5.480 at 101 mph
- Doug Mangrum - 5.667 at 82 mph
- Chuck Poindexter - 7.692 at 87 mph
- Gene Hector - NT
- Heath Harvey - NT
Gene Hector attempted to qualify twice but had troubles both times. Heath Harvey showed up with a new screw blower combination and didn't make any qualifying attempts but did finally make a test hit on it after first round. He had the same traction problems that seemed to plague all the other guys (except Ken).
First Round:
Ken Thomas (W) 4.044 at 180 mph (.439 RT) Competition bye
After a couple of cars broke Ken ended up with the first round bye but as you can see by his numbers, he didn't really need the bye run as he was on a great lap.
Gaylen Smith (W) 4.420 at 141 mph (.692 RT)
Doug Mangrum (RU) 5.382 at 97 mph (.476 RT)
Doug filled in for Mike Jones as he was unable to make the call and despite Doug's hole shot, Gaylen was able to drive around him for the win.
Bobby Booth (W) 4.546 at 147 mph (.437 RT)
Eric Clark (RU) NT
This is Bobby's first time out this season with a new screw blower combination. Something broke on Eric's car and Bobby made a solo run. I was on the return road getting Gaylen and all I could hear was Bobby in and out of the throttle. Welcome back Bobby!
Howard Brown (W) 5.595 at 128 mph (.880 RT)
Doug Riesterer (RU) 12.263 at 30 mph (.498 RT)
Despite leaving first, Doug encountered severe tire shake and coasted thru giving the upset win to Howard Brown.
Semi Finals:
Gaylen Smith (W) 4.238 at 181 mph (.971 RT)
Howard Brown (RU) 5.521 at 131 mph (.681 RT)
Howard's luck ran out here as Gaylen cruised right down the House of Hot Rods lane claiming the win! Hell Fish is going to the finals (YEAH!!)
Ken Thomas (W) 4.043 at 180 mph (.436 RT)
Bobby Booth (RU) 4.925 at 101 mph (.417 RT)
Bobby got the light but he also scrapped the guardrail on this run while Ken was in the other lane doing what he does best here lately.....Winning.
Finals:
Gaylen Smith (W) 4.948 at 113 mph (.454 RT)
Ken Thomas (RU) 4.030 at 180 mph (.351 RT) Red light
Gaylen had traction problems and was in and out of the throttle but it didn't matter cuz Ken left a little too soon handing the win to Gaylen and the Hell Fish. None of us saw Ken's red light and as I was going over there to congratulate them and I heard one of Bad Bird's crew members say they can't believe he red lit. I turned around and looked at the finish line and saw our win light on and Hell Fish was coming back up the track. It's been two years since we've seen that in the Pro Mod and it sure felt good. Congratulations to Team TBH for a long overdue & well deserved win and also to Ken & Susan Thomas along with the Thomas Motorsports crew for their runner-up finish!
