March 20th 2009: TOPMA, Kennedale
TOPMA Season Opener at the Texas Raceway
By Celeste Smith
WOW! Mother nature was kind to us this weekend and we had a GREAT night of racing. After the winter break, we had 17 Pro Mod teams show up to do battle TOPMA style. Here's how everything unfolded:
First Round:
Gene Hector (W) 4.105 at 166 mph (.007 RT)
Randall Reid (RU) 4.400 at 140 mph (.018 RT)
Gene had the reaction time and the E.T. Once the ambers dropped he stomped the floor and never looked back.
Gaylen Smith (W) 4.131 at 189 mph (.086 RT)
Howard Brown (RU) 5.831 at 77 mph (.103 RT)
Unfortunately, the motor let go in the nuclear frog and Howard's night was over early. Gaylen still having to pedal the car around mid track. The E.T. might have been off a little but the MPH was good.
Frankie Taylor (W) 4.419 at 142 mph (.129 RT)
Steve Wiley (RU) 5.547 at 136 mph (.048 RT)
I was down on the return road for this one and all I can tell you is I heard both cars in and out of the gas. Steve Wiley meant business and had the reaction time but shortly after launch, he had to lift.
Ken Thomas (W) 4.001 at 180 mph (.252 RT)
Jackie Deaver (RU) 4.339 at 166 mph (.058 RT)
This must have looked like a closer race in person than on paper. Ken gave Jackie the "move" and had to chase him down.
Semi-Finals:
Frankie Taylor (W) 3.884 at 193 mph (.103 RT)
Gaylen Smith (RU) 4.154 at 159 mph (.046 RT)
Gaylen left the line first and then the Hell Fish Cuda starting moving around a little. He got up next to the wall but never touched it, meanwhile....Frankie was in the House of Hot Rods/LenMar Motorsports lane
cruising right down the center taking the win.
Ken Thomas (W) 4.151 at 178 mph (.096 RT)
Gene Hector (RU) 4.373 at 160 mph (.129 RT)
Again, I didn't see this pass but both cars were off paced a bit.
Finals:
Frankie Taylor (W) 3.881 at 191 mph (.117 RT)
Ken Thomas (RU) 4.021 at 180 mph (.052 RT)
I was standing on the fence about 3/4 track and I honestly thought Ken had this one in the bag and then all of a sudden, Frankie shot past us like a rocket and claimed the win.
Congratulations to Team Taylor for their victory and also to Ken & Susan Thomas and the entire TMS team for an outstanding performance all night long. Congrats again on the personal best 3.89 pass.
